- Edge detection and de-skewing are the best I have used on a phone, free or paid

I scanned about eighty pages of assorted paperwork through Adobe Scan over three weeks — receipts, forms, a passport page, some badly photocopied contracts.
The scanning is the best on a phone
Edge detection and de-skewing are excellent, including on the difficult cases: a white form on a white table, a page in a ring binder, a receipt with a curled edge. Nothing else free handled those as cleanly.
OCR on printed text is very good, and the searchable PDF output is the actual value here — a scan you can search later is a different object from a photograph of a page.
The free tier does real work
This is not a demo. You can scan, OCR and export, and for a large share of ordinary use that is everything you need.
The upsell is constant
A significant share of actions surfaces something about Acrobat. It is not deceptive, and the free functionality is not crippled to force it, but it is persistent enough that it colours the experience.
More irritating: some export and combine operations are gated in ways you discover mid-task, having already scanned twelve pages. That is the pattern I object to most in any app — not the paywall, but finding it only after you have invested effort.
You also need an Adobe account to use the free tier at all, which for a document scanner is more than I would like to give.
The cancellation
If you do start the Acrobat trial, know before you begin that Adobe’s cancellation flow is the least pleasant thing in this review, and that depending on plan an early cancellation fee can apply. Read the terms first. This is the single most common way people end up paying Adobe for a year they did not intend.
Where I landed
Kept it for anything I need to search later. For a quick receipt I use Apple Notes, which is already on the phone, needs no account and does not upsell.
That split — good tool for the real job, built-in tool for the trivial one — is where I suspect most people should land.
Who should install it
Anyone who scans documents they will need to find again, and who can ignore an upsell.
Who should not
Anyone who scans a receipt occasionally, who is better served by the scanner already in their phone.

The scanning, the OCR and the basic PDF export are, and they do real work rather than being a demonstration. What is not free is the wider Acrobat feature set — certain combine and export operations are gated, and you tend to discover which ones by hitting them mid-task. You also need an Adobe account even to use the free tier.
Is Adobe Scan better than the iPhone's built-in scanner?
For quality, yes — the edge detection, de-skewing and OCR are noticeably better, and searchable PDF output is a real advantage. For convenience, Apple Notes wins: it is already there, needs no account, and does not upsell. For occasional receipts I would use Notes. For anything you need to search later, Adobe Scan.
